If our protagonist wants to help pay for her niece's education, then by all means, that is her perogative. Better that the money go directly towards that than a fund that is accessible to her sister.

Mom spends $7,000 of 17-year-old daughter's college fund on prom night, teen's aunt cuts access to the money to avoid further mishandling despite family's protest: "I don't trust my sister with money anymore"
When you're a teenager, prom feels like a really big deal. It's the first time most kids have an occasion to dress up really nicely with their friends. Since most prom events are restricted to older students, many teens see it as a sort of "last hurrah" with their high school cohort before they head off to college. I personally didn't spend too many big bucks on my prom night, but plenty of kids like to go all out by buying expensive dresses, ordering a limo ride, and getting their hair, nails, and make up done professionally.
In our story today, a mom wants to give her teen the full prom experience. So, she gets all of the aforementioned prom perks – including a photoshoot – paid for. However, the money, unbeknownst to the teenager, came directly from a college fund set up by her aunt. Not only that, but something isn't quite adding up.
